Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), established in 1911, was born out of a vision to elevate scientific and technological training in Portugal. This mission began with the division of the Lisbon Industrial and Commercial Institute and has grown into an institution of global significance.
Today, Técnico boasts an impressive student body of approximately 11,000 individuals from over 60 different nationalities. This diverse community thrives in an environment enriched by Bachelor, Master, and PhD programs, alongside extensive lifelong learning and Research, Development, and Innovation (RD&I) activities. Técnico’s commitment to education aligns with the highest international standards, further exemplified by its offering of over 20 joint Master’s programs (Dual Degree) and collaborative PhD programs with worldwide institutions like MIT, CMU, UT-Austin, and EPFL.
As a highly internationalised and prestigious institution, Técnico excels in Engineering, Science, and Architecture. It promotes relationships between academia, industry, and society, promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, job creation, and the sharing of knowledge. Técnico’s role as a testing partner in the Accelerate Future HEI project, funded by the European Union, highlights its commitment to driving institutional transformation in innovation and entrepreneurship across European higher education.
One of Técnico’s founding departments is the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Environment (DECivil), which stands out as one of the largest departments within the institution. With 118 teaching staff and a community of 1,500 bachelor and master students, along with 250 doctoral students, DECivil exemplifies academic and research excellence.
DECivil is a key player in Técnico’s transformative journey, serving as a demonstrator for the evolution towards more innovative and entrepreneurial higher education institutions. The department is actively identifying areas of excellence and growth opportunities, setting a future where entrepreneurship and innovation are central to prosperity.
