Over the past three years, the Business Laboratory has become much more than an entrepreneurship training programme in Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. It has evolved into a vibrant platform where students, new entrepreneurs, experienced business professionals, municipalities, and regional stakeholders come together to learn, collaborate, and create opportunities for their future.
Since its launch in 2024 as part of the international project Accelerate Future HEI, the Business Laboratory has supported the development of entrepreneurial skills, encouraged knowledge exchange, and strengthened cooperation between Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (ViA), regional governments, and the business community. Between 2024 and 2026, the programme saw an increase in interest and participation engaging a total of 101 participants over the three-year period, including 79 entrepreneurs and 22 students, creating a growing network of innovators across the Vidzeme region. Multiple Business Laboratory participants applied for municipal entrepreneurship grant competitions and 8 of them were awarded with these grants to further their business ideas. One of the key strengths of the Business Laboratory has been its strong focus on learning from experience. Throughout the programme, participants have worked closely with university lecturers, successful entrepreneurs, industry experts, and mentors who openly shared their knowledge, practical insights, and lessons learned. This exchange of experience has helped participants refine their business ideas, develop confidence, and gain valuable perspectives on entrepreneurship. Networking has also played a very big role in growth process. Many participants have highlighted the opportunity to meet like-minded people, build professional relationships, and receive encouragement from peers as one of the most valuable aspects of the programme. The Business Laboratory has created an environment where ideas can be discussed openly, partnerships can emerge, and future collaborations can begin.
Business Laboratory 2026 brought together a remarkably diverse range of business ideas, showcasing both the creativity of participants and the development potential of the Vidzeme region. The ideas covered everything from innovative design products and creative services to equestrian sports and leisure experiences, tourism development, personal growth platforms, and the creation of traditional costume elements inspired by Latvian cultural heritage. This variety highlights the programme’s ability to support entrepreneurs from different industries while fostering innovation rooted in local strengths and traditions. Feedback from participants consistently highlights the value of mentorship, practical learning, and community support. As one participant shared on social media, the programme provided not only knowledge and tools but also the confidence to take the next step in developing a business idea. Others have emphasized the inspiration gained from meeting experienced entrepreneurs and hearing real stories about both challenges and successes.
The success of the Business Laboratory would not be possible without the active involvement of regional municipalities. The municipalities of Cēsis, Limbaži, and Smiltene have been important partners throughout the programme, ensuring organizational support, providing information about local grant opportunities, and actively encouraging entrepreneurship within their communities. Their engagement highlights how cooperation between higher education institutions and local governments can create lasting benefits for regional development, strengthen local business ecosystems, and inspire future entrepreneurs.
As the programme enters its next stage, sustainability remains a key priority. The Business Laboratory is being integrated into the study curriculum at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, ensuring that future generations of students and entrepreneurs will continue to benefit from this collaborative learning environment.
Over these three years, Business Laboratory has proven that entrepreneurship grows strongest when knowledge is shared, experiences are exchanged, and communities work together. By connecting people, supporting ideas, and strengthening regional partnerships, the programme helps to build a more innovative and resilient future for Vidzeme.
